Vanitas on nails!


This stamping plate with skulls, skeletons and flowers reminds me of the Vanitas: a genre of still life painting that flourished in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. It included various symbolic objects designed to remind the viewer of their mortality and the worthlessness of wordly goods and pleasures.

A vanitas painting, while possibly containing lovely objects, always included some reference to man's mortality. Most often, this is a human skull (with or without other bones), but items like burning candles, soap bubbles and decaying flowers may be used for this purpose as well.

I love the fact that the plate offers so many combinations, there are full pattern to paint on the entire nail and some smaller elements such as geometric figures.
